Revision "D" 03/01/07
This year's POD has now been published!
To understand the flow, you may look at the 2007 "Plan of the Day"
for the trip.
Our target arrival time is 7:30. The movie starts at
8:00. To accomplish this you must leave Raleigh by 2:30, or
perhaps as late as 3:00 if you don't stop. We will only board the
ship when most of the attendees have arrived.
Our Manifest is available HERE. Please Review!!!

First and most important
point, for Friday arrival you must be ON
BOARD the ship by 9:00 P.M.
Second most important point, for Friday arrival you must be ON BOARD the ship by 9:00 P.M.
Third most important point, for Friday arrival you must be ON BOARD the ship by 9:00 P.M.
This is a three day, two night, trip to a retired United States Navy
Aircraft carrier permanently docked in Charleston Harbor. The
ship is
fixed in place and does not leave the dock. It has been setup as
a
museum and memorial to the Naval efforts of WWII. There is a
movie
theatre on board where cubs and adults can watch the movie "Fighting
Lady". Cubs and male adults will stay in the enlisted men's
quarters. Female attendees will stay in the slightly more
luxurious officers quarters. Breakfasts and dinner will be served
in the ship's galley. Attendees may, at their own choosing, opt
to visit a Charleston restuarant for the Saturday evening meal.
- Each attendee must bring a sleeping bag, pillow, soap, towel, and
all
other necessary personal effects. Insect repellent is advisable. Rigid
back packs are not advised, instead bring your gear in soft backpacks
or duffle bags. Extra articles are not advised; this is a WWII era
ship, with little excess room. Additionally you will have to
climb up ladders and traverse catwalks with your gear to get to the
sleeping quarters. Particularly if your cub cannot carry his own
gear, this can become a hardship for the adult.
- Please bring extra clothes, jackets, shoes and other
articles. Pack them seperately and leave them in your car.
During the day you can always retrieve them as needed.
- Patriots Point Camp Safety policy restricts campers to ages six and
above. Campers 6-10
must be accompanied by a parent or responsible
adult. Campers 11-17 must have a group adult leader and one chaperone
per every 10 campers. Female leaders must be responsible for female
participants and male leaders for male participants.
In addition to exploring the Yorktown, submarine, destroyer, and Coast
Guard Cutter anchored at Patriots Point, attendees will also have a
Saturday trip to Fort Sumter.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so we have attached a few
from previous trips to the bottom of this document.
Now that we have the descriptive summary out of the way, did we mention
that for Friday
arrival you must be ON BOARD
the ship by 9:00 P.M.?
I know this repetitiveness seems ridiculous, but every time we go
someone shows up at
9:30-11:30 due to traffic, late start, or whatever, and tries to get on
board. When these exchanges get heated, they reflect poorly on
the pack. I really want to have one visit in which this does not
happen. Here is a quote directly from Patriot's Point:
"Because of
the fire code and as stated in a letter received from the
State Fire Marshal’s office,…“It is required that all persons sleeping
onboard participate in a fire drill and physically traverse the escape
route”…prior to the first night of their visit. To meet these
requirements, all campers and adults must be onboard by 9:00 p.m., with
no exceptions. We regret that those individuals who cannot meet these
requirements may not camp onboard."
The Yorktown is located at Patriot's Point on Patriots Point Rd, Mount
Pleasant, SC 29464-4377 (phone 843-884-2727).
Drive time is listed as 4:52 from St. Timothys. Please see our "directions
page" at http://www.pack334.org/public/docs/Patriot'sPointDirections.html
The closest (but not necessarily the cheapest) accommodations are in
the
Charleston Harbor
Resort.
Pack334 members can receive a discounted room at $179/night (down from the rack rate of $199). Ask for Anne.

Rounding the drive time to an even 5:00 hours, one can calculate that
leaving St. Timothy's promptly at 3:00 would result in an 8:00 P.M.
arrival if everything goes well. I would recommend leaving at
3:00 or EARLIER. Last time we succeeded in getting the cubs
released from school at 2:30. I think this would be a prudent
move this time as well.
Upon arrival we will form up in the Patriot's Point parking lot and can have a sort of Tailgating session. There is
ample room there for the cubs to run and play, which would be a good
idea after a five hour drive. It should help them settle down
before going onto the ship. However, there is also water and mud
and an ample opportunity to get wet and dirty, so keep that in mind (no
fun starting out with your only pair of shoes soaking wet.
It is recommended that St. Timothy's uniforms be removed prior to
boarding. There will be many cubs in close quarters and clothing
can get easily confused. Save your class A uniform for Sat.
Here are a couple of shots from the Hangar Bay, where numerous, once
operable war planes are parked.
There is also a submarine and other ships docked beside the Yorktown
that are available for the cubs to explore.
There are numerous items the cubs can actually touch and manipulate
Here are pictures of the crew's quarters where we will be sleeping (or
attempting to).
